Alchemy of Movement's dance troupes are semester-long adult performance teams that combine weekly rehearsals, choreography training, community, and a final stage performance. Whether you're brand new to performing or an experienced dancer looking for a challenge, our troupes offer a supportive way to grow as a dancer while building lasting friendships.
Because we do things a little differently here, we’ve put together some FAQs to help you get a little more acquainted with the process!

The show weekend is November 20–21, 2026, the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Dancers should plan to be available both days for dress rehearsals and performances.

Here’s a general (and intentionally vague) answer:
L1 dancers are learning how to become more aware of their bodies, how to move as a team, how to practice at home effectively, and how to bring it with confidence on stage!
L2 dancers have developed body and spatial awareness, and are learning to fine-tune isolations and make their movements full and precise. They're pretty confident on stage and are beginning to work on more nuanced expression and movement.
L3 dancers have strong body control and spatial awareness. They pick up choreography quickly and are great at self-assessing and correcting. Stage presence comes naturally to them, so the focus shifts to the nuances of musicality, conditioning, consistency as a team, and artistic expression.
Because our dancers come from many different backgrounds, traditional labels like "beg/int/adv" don't always fit well. All of our troupes are intended to be fun, challenging, and growth-oriented.

FUN!
Auditions are just as much for you as they are for us.
Dancers sign up for 1-2 dates based on the level they’d like to be considered for. During that 90 minutes, they try all of the elements & instructors at that level.
At the end, we ask you what you thought your best matches were, and at the end of the week, we’ll send you your placement(s). We cannot guarantee you’ll get your top choices or a time slot that works with your schedule, but we do take your preferences into consideration during placements. -
During auditions, we look at musicality, choreography retention, performance quality, stage presence, commitment, and overall team fit.
After auditions, the instructors collect preferences and make placements based on skill, energy & potential. You then choose your favorite one (or two) to join for the semester! We cannot guarantee you’ll get your top choices or a time slot that works with your schedule, but we do take your preferences into consideration during placements. We do our absolute best to find a good fit for everyone!

Nope!
We do expect folks to be able to generally catch a beat for L1, but you do not need to have training. Just a love of music, a passion for groovin’ to the beat, and a desire to grow as a dancer!
-
We’ve built the program to be inclusive of many levels and backgrounds. That said, our level 3 teams will definitely be more competitive to get into, but if L3 isn’t the right fit for you, we have some incredible opportunities with L1 and L2!
-
Nope! We’ll go over everything you need at the audition itself, so no worries at all.
-
PSHAW, never! Our dance teams are very wide age ranges. Minimum age is 18, but we have folks performing into their 60s!
We do ask for age on the intake form, but that’s to check the minimum age requirement, not the max 😅
Auditions & Placement
-
Troupes meet for one 2-hour rehearsal each week for 16 weeks. Dancers are expected to practice between rehearsals and attend all required show week rehearsals.
You may miss up to 3 rehearsals during the semester, though we recommend planning for no more than one scheduled absence so you have flexibility for illness or emergencies.
-
Non-member: Deposit of $150 + 4 payments of $99, or $499 up front.
Alchemy Members: Deposit of $135 + 4 payments of $89, $449 up front.
Additional discounts if you do 2 teams!
No Hidden Fees Here! Your tuition includes: instructor time for auditions and rehearsals, practice videos, an online community, performance & venue fees, professional photo & videography fees, and team swag. The only additional cost will be your costumes.
-
Yes! But we recommend a max of 2 because you learn two pieces per troupe. Managing 6 pieces ends up being pretty overwhelming towards the end of the semester.

About the teams
-
Most dance studios with performance troupes require formal dance training. Our dancers have very mixed backgrounds, and we want to encourage people to try styles out of their comfort zones, so we decided to do things differently.
Alchemy troupes are based on the elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Each one has a different vibe and can incorporate all sorts of different styles!
Here are the general categorizations:
Air (LIGHT): free, playful, silly, uplifting, wild, joyful, spirited
Fire (HOT): fabulous, flirty, dirrty, sassy, sensual, fierce
Earth (GROUNDED): confident, empowering, gritty, strong, powerful
Water (FLUID): authentic, passionate, heart-opening, tender, gentle, moving -
The cool thing about the elemental categorization is that instructors can get super creative with styles within their element. That means every semester is a surprise! That’s why we set up auditions the way we do—you get a little taste of what we’re up to!
Here are some genres that have inspired us in the past:
Hip Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical, Ballet, SOCA, Dancehall, Reggaeton, Bachata, Jazz, Funk, Burlesque, Commercial, KPop, Flamenco, Salsa, Bollywood, Bhangra and more!
